CSK04210 Language Unit
Welcome to CSK04210 Language Unit. The unit has 40 hours and will cover research reading notes, oral presentation strategies, paragraph writing, essay writing, citation and quotation, plagiarism and strategies to avoid it and patient/community management investigation.

Assignment 1: Due on 20 January 2012 (Dentistry and Anaesth) and 17 January 2012 (Ophta and Physio)
Choose one published article in your field of study. You can use a database such as Hinari to find the article. Read the article using the reading strategies covered in the class. Prepare a three minute report presentation answering these questions:
1. Question(s)/Hypothesis(-ses): What research question(s)/hypothesis(-ses) are being addressed?
2. Setting: What is the sector and setting? (e.g. school, higher education, training, informal learning)
3. Concepts: What theories, concepts and key terms are being used?
4. Methods: What methods of data collection and analysis are used? (e.g. the number of participants; the type of technologies; the use of interviews, surveys, observation, etc.)
5. Findings: What did this research find out?

Assignment 2: Due on February 6 (Physiotherapy, Ophtalmology, Dentistry and Anaesthesia)
Write a five paragraph essay following this process:
1. Decide on the topic, brainstorm to have ideas of what you will include in your essay.
2. Find at least three relevant sources you will cite or quote from to support your idea and read them.
3. Build up your essay as we learn more about essay writing, citing and quoting in the class.
4. Bring your typed first draft essay to class on January 27 (Dentistry and Anaesthesia) or January 31 (Physiotherapy and Ophtalmology). Be ready to trade your first draft with your peer, read your peer's draft and provide constructive feedback.
5. Edit your essay, proofread it and submit both the soft and hard copies of your final draft by February 6. The hard copies will be collected on Monday, February 6 while the soft copies will be emailed to me as a word document by each individual student.
